In Mortal history, there was an era where the chivalrous nature of courtly love was held in the highest regard. Apparently, it showed the highest respect and honor to have deep emotional ties to someone that you would rarely see, and almost never touch.
If you truly, passionately loved some fetching lady of the court, you would demonstrate this by going on quests far, far away. When at home, you would attend to the needs of the kingdom, trusting that the few moments that you spared for your lady love, would of course be more than enough to keep the flame of wanting ignited.
And the lady, if she truly love this knight, was supposed to not only be flattered and seduced (in the chastest sense of the word) by all this inattention, she was suppose to encourage and support it. Brag to all of her maids in waiting that they had true job security, they like her, would always be waiting.
You mortals are silly, silly beings.
It's a wonder that more of said damsels didn't tie the idiots to trees, and have their way with them just out of sheer frustration at the torture. They should have been put to the stake for love starving the innocent.
Thank the gods that we Goblins, and Dark Fey, do not behave that way.
( I don't care what you've heard.)
More bitter resentment later, my darlings,
Her Wicked Majesty,
Obsidian Shard the 13th
